THE RIFF WHICH MADE YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GUITAR IS?
Pablo Roybal:  Probably the “Shock Me” riff.  I remember seeing Kiss on the reunion tour in 1996 and watching Ace play that night was the reason that I bought my first Les Paul guitar.

WHAT IS THE FIRST RIFF YOU LEARNED TO PLAY?
Pablo Roybal:  The “Crazy Train” riff played by Randy Rhodes.

YOUR TOP THREE METAL RIFFERS ARE?
Pablo Roybal:  Have to go with Michael Wilton, Reb Beach, and Jeff Loomis.

WHO IS THE MASTER OF THE RIFF?
Pablo Roybal:  Tony Iommi is arguably THE master of the metal riff.  Not necessarily one of my favorites, but his track record speaks for itself.

THE RIFF WHICH IS THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE IS?
Pablo Roybal:  Hard to narrow it down to one, but I’m going to go with Maiden’s “The Trooper.”  Iron Maiden has become the soundtrack to my life and attending their concerts in an empowering experience.  When they go into “The Trooper,” EVERY Iron Maiden fan knows that song regardless of if they just discovered the band or if they have been a fan for 30 years.  Nothing like being immersed in a crowd of thousands of fans all singing along to the same song.  It is like a battle cry.

THE RIFF YOU WISH YOU WROTE IS?
Pablo Roybal:  Too many to narrow it down to a definitive one, but one riff that I have always loved and have unsuccessfully tried to copy several times is the “Smoke The Sky” riff on Motley Crue’s self-titled 1994 album.  That riff is just crushing!  If I show it to someone who has never heard it, no one believes that it is Motley Crue.

THE WORST METAL RIFF EVER IS?
Pablo Roybal:  Tough question.  Off the top of my head, I would have to say Pantera’s “Walk.”  Nothing against Dime or Pantera because they have some pretty killer ones too, but that one just seems really beneath them.  It’s a shame that it is one of the songs that they are most recognized for because they have so much better.

RIFF FOR RIFF YOUR FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS ARE?
Pablo Roybal:  Thinking about this question and I realized that a lot of my favorite albums are actually more melodically based than riff based.  Taking riffs into consideration, I would have to go with:

Operation: Mindcrime (Queensryche)
Erase The Slate  (Dokken)
Gambling With The Devil  (Helloween)
Silicon Messiah (Blaze)
Dead Heart In A Dead World (Nevermore)

A NON METALHEAD ASKS YOU WHAT DOES METAL SOUND LIKE, THE RIFF YOU PLAY THEM IS?
Pablo Roybal:  As much as I hate to admit it, probably the main riff on Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets.”  It has kind of been beat into the ground but that is part of why it is one of the quintessential metal riffs of all time.

THE RIFF YOU WANT PLAYED AT YOUR FUNERAL IS?
Pablo Roybal:  Probably the bass riff to Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust.”  Kind of says it all and just about everyone knows that riff.

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT RIFFS ANYWAY?
Pablo Roybal:  A great riff can be a great hook in itself.  It gets stuck in your head and can compel you to pick up a guitar either learn how to play it or try to create your own.

Their is a fine tradition of doom bands which can be traced back to Sabbath's early and highly influential albums. Albums which inspired a whole host of metal bands from Saint Vitus to Trouble to slow things down to a sometimes primordial crawl while the the rest of the metal world were trying to break the speed barrier and take things to new extremes. Metal needed bands who carried on the original template and kept the fires of the foundation burning so with each new extreme in metal there has always been  a doom band amongst them like Pagan Altar and their like emerging at the height of the nwobhm movement or Dream Death in the thrash movement incorporating the Sabbath doom. Of course not to forget to mention Pentagram but for me they belong to the first wave of doom along with Sabbath. Conviction follow the path taken by Saint Vitus and play a very doomy and extremely slow paced hellish and tormented style of metal. The album is close to the reunion Vitus album with Wino in feeling and style. The music will not impress the average metalhead but with those who have a knowledge of the underground and the origins of the genre, this is where Conviction will find their home. For the true doom heads out there.

THE RIFF WHICH MADE YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GUITAR IS?
It'd probably have to be the main riff in Enter Sandman. I don't even remember how old I was when I heard it (probably 6 or 7?) I think it sparked my interest in guitar...even if I didn't know it at the time.

WHAT IS THE FIRST RIFF YOU LEARNED TO PLAY?
I believe it was Iron Man by Black Sabbath (is it even necessary to name the band here?)

YOUR TOP THREE METAL RIFFERS ARE?
Id say Trey Azagthoth, Mike Sifringer (Destruction), and then I'd say a tie between Jon Nodtveidt (Dissection) , and La Sale De Famine (Peste Noire)

WHO IS THE MASTER OF THE RIFF?
Tommy Iommi of course!

THE RIFF WHICH IS THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE IS?
The final fantasy prelude!.....no really though.

THE RIFF YOU WISH YOU WROTE IS?
The Angel Of Death bridge riff (doesn't every metal head feel this way?)

THE WORST METAL RIFF EVER IS?
I don't know....sometimes bad riffs are funny and amusing but I guess I'd just have to say every Metallica riff after 1990 are pretty much the worst riffs ever.

RIFF FOR RIFF YOUR FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS ARE?
Riff for riff...I don't define it that way but I guess some of my favorite albums would be
Bathory - The Return
Possessed - Seven Churches
Sarcofago - Rotting
Morbid Angel -  Covenant
Windir - Arntor Ein Windir

A NON METALHEAD ASKS YOU WHAT DOES METAL SOUND LIKE, THE RIFF YOU PLAY THEM IS?
HOLY WARS...The Punishment Due!!!

THE RIFF YOU WANT PLAYED AT YOUR FUNERAL IS?
The beginning of One Winged Angel by Nobuo Uematsu!

Recently reformed death metallers DEVAST, return with their second and most extreme studio offering, Into Decimated Reality. DEVAST treats its instruments as weapons of mass destruction and seem to have no concern for providing the listener with a tool for meditative thought and surely are not concerned with the creation of a relaxing atmosphere. An apocalyptic and destructive concept of the human world and remarked structure in the veins of brutal technical death metal band such as Origin, Dying Fetus, Internal Suffering, and more. After a 6 year hiatus, relocation and new line up, DEVAST proves that no boundaries can stop the technical death machine entitled "Into Decimated Reality"

Featuring artwork by Tony Cosgrove (Stages Of Decompostion,Saprogenic, Syphilic), Into Decimated Reality was recorded at Rockoletta Studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina and was mixed/mastered by Mahdi Riahi at Painful Productions in Germany.

Originally released in 1986 via Metal Blade in USA and in The Netherlands via Roadrunner Records, Sentinel Beast's classic debut Depths of Death will emerge from the crypts of old school thrash. On 2nd March 2015, Irish label Marquee Records will unleash this thunderous beast of an album.

Check Out 'Dogs Of War' Here!
http://youtu.be/Za2nSMSvEfA

Although they have been largely overlooked by most mainstream-leaning heavy metal historians, the cultists who truly live and breathe the old-school stuff wave the flag of Sentinel Beast.

Led by female vocalist Debbie Gunn, Sentinel Beast formed in Sacramento, California, in 1984 with bassist Michael Spencer, drummer Scott Awes, and guitarists Greg Williams and Jerry Frazier fleshing out the lineup. The group wedded the melodic yet aggressive flair of NWOBHM bands such as Angel Witch and Cloven Hoof with the propulsive rhythmic attack favoured by the early thrash movement. After recording three demos in their first couple of years together, Sentinel Beast started gaining a buzz within the underground metal community, with Slayer’s Kerry King and Omen’s Kenny Powell becoming two of the group’s loudest cheerleaders. But Sentinel Beast’s biggest champion was Brian Slagel, the founder and CEO of Metal Blade Records, the Southern California-based label that helped launch the careers of heavy metal icons like Metallica, Voivod, Cannibal Corpse, and the aforementioned Slayer. Slagel would go on to sign Sentinel Beast to his then fledgling label, further cementing the already growing reputation as one of North America’s most promising speed metal acts. With guitarists Barry Fischel and Mark Koyasako replacing Williams and Frazier, a revitalised Sentinel Beast entered Track Record studios in North Hollywood with famed producer Bill Meteyor (D.R.I., Sacred Reich) to record their debut album, Depths of Death.

Released in 1986, the album found the quintet delivering on the promise of their demos. Blistering thrash assaults like the opening title track and 'Evil Is the Night' compliment the moodier cuts that also appear on the album including the instantly memorable 'The Keeper.' A faithful cover of Iron Maiden’s 'Phantom of the Opera' also proves to be a fine addition to the album, paying tribute to one of Sentinel Beast’s spiritual brethren.

Despite sharing the stage with artists like Megadeth, Motörhead, and Exodus, Sentinel Beast would go on to break up after Spencer left the fold to replace Jason Newsted in Flotsam & Jetsam, who himself had quit his band to join Metallica after the death of Cliff Burton. After Sentinel Beast split up in 1987, Gunn moved to Chicago to front Znowhite, eventually relocating to Europe to join the all-female thrash outfit, Ice Age.

After lying dormant for 20 years, Sentinel Beast awoke in 2007 with Gunn again leading the charge. Since then, the band has toured Europe and Mexico, and released the Risen Demo EP (2009), and a compilation of material from the ‘80s called Up From The Ashes via StormSpell Records. Still a commanding live act, Sentinel Beast continues to floor audiences throughout the world on both large festival stages and inside sweaty heavy metal clubs.

Hybrid Nightmares are releasing their new 4 CD project titled 'The Ages' over the course of 2015. The release will consist of over 100 minutes of music with 'The First Age' (CD 1) being released on the 17th of February.

The First Age Track listing:
1.Satya
2.Illumination
3.Black Heart
4.Dead Star Goddess
5.Inside

Hybrid Nightmares are:
Loki (Vocals)
Ben (Guitars)
Gummers (Guitars)
Jonny (Bass)
Batman (Drums)

A little about Hybrid Nightmares:
Formed in 2008 this quintet has earned a reputation as one of Melbourne's best live acts through a chaotic, relentless and above all, entertaining live show. Taking influence from black, death, groove, folk and classic heavy metal, the 'Nightmare' sound is a sonic maelstrom that defies any categorization other than 'extreme'. Not content with simply playing to an Australian audience, Hybrid Nightmares are looking to the global metal scene and will bring their worship of the Cult of The Obelisk worldwide.

'The Ages' is a 4 CD collection that explores the rise and fall, evolution and extinction of mankind across four eras of existence.

“After creation, we have an era of peace. Death and disease are unknown – all that exists is perfect order and harmony across the cosmos. All things must end, however, and as the first man dies, the first vestiges of chaos herald a new age. As man becomes more and more frightened of losing what he has, war and conflict break out, bringing in an age where order and chaos are just barely balanced. When this balance breaks, chaos reigns supreme, with death and destruction as the only rulers of the stars. At the end of this age, we see a rapid decay….and a rebirth. The cycle repeats. And repeats again. But every age has its story, and every story has its teller.
Soon, these stories will be told.” says the band.

Ukraine's oldest protagonists of old school doom APOSTATE will unleash their hellish and horror inspired sophomore album "Time of Terror" on March 02, 2015 throughFERRRUM Records. The sound on Apostate's "Time Of Terror" is massive. Great walls of dark, opaque guitars crashing down, chugging along at a tempo that conveys an urgency and brooding sense of menace. There's something almost regal about Apostate; their sound maintains that sedate, classy Continental vibe but holds onto a tension and aggression, even in the slowest songs. Fans of Anathema, Hooded Menace and Eye of Solitude will be salivating at the prospect of this unholy feast of doomed death metal fury! An epic statement and a watershed in doom metal, location be damned.

Time Of Terror Tracklisting:
1. Solar Misconception
2. Pale Reflection
3. Pain Served Slow
4. Memory Eclipse
5. World Undying

Apostate is:
Alexander Kostko (Bass)
Bohdan Kozub (Vocals)
Nikita Holovin (Drums)
Vlad Filimon (Guitar)
Yuriy Savchuk (Guitar)

Opener "Thrash and Burn" bursts the door down as the declaration of thrashing intent is made. The song does exactly what it says on the tin. "8%" starts off with the sound of the bass guitar as the guitar picks some gentle notes and then were off again at breakneck speed, The vocals are more harsher than the average thrash band, think of Norther or Ensiferum or if you really want to hit the nail on the head then the vocals are a dead ringer for Jeff from Carcass. They've got that same sarcastic snarl and bite that while harsh is yet strangely melodic all at once. The songs present many changes in pace and groove and offer more than just thrash. Personal favourite "Incinerator" brings some nwobhm style riffage to the table while "Direwolf"has some crazy over the top classic metal vocals to boot think of Messiah of Candlemass fame on thrash steroids and your close and then to top things off they bring some old school death metal vocals for the mid-section..
An all to short but sweet metal debut.

With the release of their debut album, Catacombs just over a month away, Dubai based prog death metallers Voice of the Soul unveil another treat for their ever-growing fan base.

Following a recent playthrough for track 'Pendulum' (watch here) the band now release a lyric video for penultimate track 'Defiled'.

Watch the 'Defiled' Lyric Video Here!
http://youtu.be/padkcOX_5ck

" 'Defiled' is about the apathetic, selfish society we live in. While we assume that individualism and the lack of empathy is liberating, it is actually a form of enslavement. Break away from a life of deception. Like rats, you carry the disease. Defiled and wasted, your existence is worthless," comments vocalist and guitarist Kareem.

Catacombs is set for release on 27th March 2015 distributed via UK label Hell’s Hammer & India’s Transcending Obscurity.

First formed in Kuwait on the opposite side of the Persian Gulf in late 2007, 17 year-old Kareem Chehayeb and 16 year-old Monish Shringi released their first EP, Winds of Apprehension in July 2009 with second EP, Eyes of Deceit seeking the light of day the following summer. After playing several shows in Dubai since January 2011, the band opted to relocate to the most popular city and emirate in the UAE before releasing their third EP, Into Oblivion, live on SOS Heavy Metal Radio in Portugal in August 2011. Into Oblivion was undoubtedly the band's most successful record with songs receiving regular airplay across the globe.

During April 2014, the band made home at Haven Studio with producer Hadi Sarieddine in Dubai and recorded their debut full-length album, Catacombs.

Artwork was designed by Syrian Dubai-based artist Hamood Hallak of MHD Graphics.

The lyric video was edited by Andres Montero Conde [https://www.facebook.com/B2crea]

DAWN OF THE NINE will be the name of the twelfth studio album by Swedish death metal pioneers UNLEASHED, due out this spring via Nuclear Blast.
UNLEASHED founding member, bassist, and vocalist Johnny shares the following about the cover artwork created by Pär Olofsson (EXODUS, IMMORTAL, ABYSMAL DAWN):
“The artwork represents the continuation of our previous album, which ended with ‘The Great Battle of Odalheim.’ The battle took place at Uppsala Fields in Sweden, and you can clearly see the king’s grave in the cover art work which also represents the future. You can also see the bombed out church in the far distance, the place of blood in the front, and the rune stone with the runic symbol of courage of the new dawn.”
Recorded & produced by UNLEASHED guitarist Fredrik Folkare at his own Chrome Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, the track listing for DAWN OF THE NINE is:
01. A New Day Will Rise
02. They Came To Die
03. Defenders Of Midgard
04. Where Is Your God Now?
05. The Bolt Thrower
06. Let The Hammer Fly
07. Where Churches Once Burned
08. Land Of The Thousand Lakes
09. Dawn Of The Nine
10. Welcome The Son Of Thor!

Debut album from the epic doom / traditional metal band Cromlech hailing from Canada offers up one epic doom ride. The album opens with an intro signaling the lengthy march into battle long before the carnage begins and so the albums begins the tales of battle fought and hero's lost. The band recount their hymns with lengthy drawn out songs, epic in their scope. Those looking for rapid fire thrash riffs or devastatingly crushing death metal or even atmospheric black metal will find nothing here to latch onto but old school trad metal heads with a spot in their collective hearts for old metal and doom will find a great debut offering which will satisfy their metallic needs. That's not to say the pace doesn't pick up because it does many times but it's more an old school gallop rather than razor thrash. When I first heard the album it took some time to grow on me due to the length of the tracks but now that's it's charm for me. It's metal for the patient those who are in it for the long haul. The album really is one of the best debut albums from an epic doom band that I've heard in some time.

THE RIFF WHICH MADE YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GUITAR IS?

Oh man, totally Into the Void by Sabbath. Shame that I had no idea what dropped tunings were and tried to play it and standard when I was starting out haha.

WHAT IS THE FIRST RIFF YOU LEARNED TO PLAY? Smoke on the Water... gotta be almost everyone, am I right?

YOUR TOP THREE METAL RIFFERS ARE? David DiSanto from Vektor... absolute master of what he does and if you haven't checked them out DO IT! Jus Oborn from Electric Wizard is another big one to me, if you're into doom you're probably already into The Wizard, but if not pack some 'erbs and chill out. Last but certainly not least, Andy La Roque from King Diamond is just a machine. Everything he comes up with is pure gold.

WHO IS THE MASTER OF THE RIFF? Without a shadow of a doubt, Tony Iommi from Sabbath. We are not worthy.

THE RIFF WHICH IS THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE IS? The chorus riff of "Serenade of Lead" by Asphyx. So heavy.

THE RIFF YOU WISH YOU WROTE IS?
The main riff to "Forever My Queen" by
Pentagram.

THE WORST METAL RIFF EVER IS? I have one opinion but I'd get axed for sharing... so let's just say something from Bullet for My Valentine.

RIFF FOR RIFF YOUR FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS ARE? 1. Dopethrone (Electric Wizard 2. Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath) 3. Killing Machine/Hellbent for Leather (Judas Priest) 4. Van Halen (Van Halen) 5. Satan Worshipping Doom (Bongripper)

A NON METALHEAD ASKS YOU WHAT DOES METAL SOUND LIKE, THE RIFF YOU PLAY THEM IS? Painkiller, straight up. No mercy.

THE RIFF YOU WANT PLAYED AT YOUR FUNERAL IS? Probably the main riff from Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard.

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT RIFFS ANYWAY? They are the perfect compliment to a haze of beer and smoke.
