FOR THIS WEEKS IN THE RIFF WE TRUST WE PUT THE HARD QUESTIONS TO MITA FROM MISTRESS.

Hey, this is Mita, the guitar player from Mistress.  Thanks for having me here, and for having such excellent topics of discussion!

THE RIFF WHICH MADE YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GUITAR IS?

There are so many!  Probably "Come As You Are" by Nirvana.  My friend was playing it on an acoustic, so I asked him to show it to me.  That was the first time I picked up a guitar.

WHAT IS THE FIRST RIFF YOU LEARNED TO PLAY?

"Come As You Are" by Nirvana, but my first real accomplishment was learning the "Mr Crowley" solo.

YOUR TOP THREE METAL RIFFERS ARE?

In order a very particular order:
#1.  Myself
#2.  James Hetfield
#3.  Angus Young (Not really metal, but what a monster riffer!)

WHO IS THE MASTER OF THE RIFF?

I am the master of the riff!  There are a couple of others too I guess.  The two guys in the previous question are pretty good.  Dimebag Darrell has some amazing riffs even though I never really got into Pantera.  Historically speaking though, I think that title belongs to Tony Iommi.

THE RIFF WHICH IS THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE IS?

It depends on the day really.  I go from "Battery" to "Fell On Black Days" on a regular basis.

THE RIFF YOU WISH YOU WROTE IS?

"You Really Got Me", Van Halen version.  What a badass riff!!  This riff also demonstrates the fact that it's not all about writing the riff.  Playing it is half the battle.  The original version by The Kinks is cool, but it wasn't until Eddie played it that it became so epic.

THE WORST METAL RIFF EVER IS?

About 90% of Dream Theater riffs....  No hate mail please.  I saw a "how to write a riff" video from John Petrucci.  He played some crappy thing in A.  He then said, well, let's make it a little more "unique", so let's lower this note by a half step.  Now let's raise this one a bit.  Now let's make the whole thing in 9.3/pi^2 time.  It sounded exactly as you can imagine.  Anything that is written from a mathematical perspective first is the worst metal riff ever.

RIFF FOR RIFF YOUR FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS ARE?

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Cradle of Filth - Midian
Ozzy - Blizzard of Oz
Angra - Temple of Shadows
Nirvana - Nevermind (again, no hate mail please)

A NON METALHEAD ASKS YOU WHAT DOES METAL SOUND LIKE, THE RIFF YOU PLAY THEM IS?

Any one of my songs obviously.  I might do Battery for an encore though.

THE RIFF YOU WANT PLAYED AT YOUR FUNERAL IS?

That will never happen since I am immortal.  The riff I would play at someone else's funeral is "One".

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT RIFFS ANYWAY?

The number one awesome thing about riffs is the groove!  You can really rock out, head bang, get energized from a riff.  It's hard to get those feelings from non riff music.

After many delays it now looks like this mammoth documentary will finally see the light of day sometime by the end of this year. With so many great bands, classic albums, headbanging riffs and fist raising metal it's about time the Uk scene got the recognition it deserves.

About

The Story of UK Thrash
Description
A History of a Time To Come - the story of UK thrash, a documentary telling the tale of british thrash metal through the ages, from the early 80s to the present day.

The film aims to fill in the blanks in the history of the genre, where those bands who were once so popular, have faded from memory.

We, the film makers, are fans of the genre, and we're looking for as much input as possible from our fellow fans. If you have any memories/memorabilia, photos, videos or stories we'd love to hear from you, via Twitter, E-Mail or Facebook.

I always said that when a thrash album starts off with an acoustic instrumental then it bodes well for the onslaught to come and sure enough soon after the last gentle note is played with great effect the thrashing commences. Think of it as the calm before the storm the deceiving smile on the face before the kill. Hailing from Australia and following on from the fallout created by two previous  Eps  comes their first full length assault. I don't know what they put in the water down under but the vocals come in like a rabid animal and the sound of a man mentally possessed by some demon starts to come from your speakers giving the faint of heart the shits. Far from the sheen and shine of the Bay Area and more akin to the European thrash bands of the eighties who always had a bit more bite than their American counterparts if perhaps at the sacrifice of song writing but not here, you get all the violence and vicious bite with quality songs to boot. The album is quite unlike a lot of modern thrash releases which are produced to perfection and sometimes in doing so squeeze the beauty and power of thrash out of the music for the pure joy of thrash is in that energetic burst of power, passion and aggression which gets your blood pumping and Malakyte offer us in spades. The album works best when divided into two sides the same way the old albums were with a Side A and Side B. The band almost knowingly divide the album into two by having another short instrumental in the form of "Skeksis" to introduce us to side two of the album and the effect of this only heightens the impact of the final songs which seem to improve as the album goes on. This is an album for thrash lifers who never get tired of that feeling when a good thrash metal album comes blasting from your speakers and makes you want to lose all control.

For this week's In the Riff We Trust we sat down with Deconstructing Sequence.

THE RIFF WHICH MADE YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GUITAR IS?

“Mother North” main riff by Satyricon! I can’t recall any other guitarwork that shredded my soul to pieces in a similar way. Very intense and inspiring, you listen to it and instantly know that this is the hymn of the North! I’ve heard that and said to myself “shit, I wanna play stuff like that”

WHAT IS THE FIRST RIFF YOU LEARNED TO PLAY?

That was “Paranoid” riff by Black Sabbath. I remember struggling with those hammer-ons thinking “how can he play them so effortlessly? That’s fuckin’ impossible!” But I had to know how to play the riff, fuck Metallica, I wanted my first riff to be Sabbath!

YOUR TOP THREE METAL RIFFERS ARE?

Karl Sanders from Nile for redefining extreme metal riffs with exotic elements, Rune “Blapshemer” Eriksen from Mayhem/Ava Inferi for brilliant harmonies and Vegard “Ihsahn” Sverre Tveitan for very eclectic and open-minded riffwork throughout Emperor and his solo work.

WHO IS THE MASTER OF THE RIFF?

Blapshemer! Maybe I don’t value his music as much as other’s, but his riffwork is exceptional. Both in terms of innovation and harmony. This guy has a 3D musical imagination, there is that extra depth to his tunes. And the stuff he made on “Ordo Ad Chao”? Pure musical genius!

THE RIFF WHICH IS THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE IS?

It’s hard to pinpoint a single riff, as the tides of life are changing, but many times when I was facing a challenge in my life and when the first wave of consternation fell back and determination kicked in instead I’ve heard opening riff to “Nemesis Divina” by Satyricon in my head.

THE RIFF YOU WISH YOU WROTE IS?

Introductory riff to “In Lies Where Upon You Lie” from Mayhem’s “Grand Declaration of War”. Brilliant melody, brilliant structure, a single riff that has some very interesting twists in it’s duration. It builds up and resolves within it’s own structure, it has an identity and story on its own.

THE WORST METAL RIFF EVER IS?

“Satanic Blood” riff by Von. Yeah I know the got some cult following and are praised by some, but seriously…. This isn’t even mediocre…

RIFF FOR RIFF YOUR FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS ARE?

“Prometheus” by Emperor, “Grand Declaration Of War” by Mayhem, “Fractal Possesion” by Abigor, “Supervillain Outcast” by Dodheimsgard, “Those Whom The Gods Detest” by Nile

A NON METALHEAD ASKS YOU WHAT DOES METAL SOUND LIKE, THE RIFF YOU PLAY THEM IS?

“Deathcrush” main riff by Mayhem. It’s just self-explanatory. Pure evil, pure metal.

THE RIFF YOU WANT PLAYED AT YOUR FUNERAL IS?

“The Light That Would Fade” first riff by Doom:VS. Nothing else suits a funeral better than doom metal and this song is top-notch!

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT RIFFS ANYWAY?

They make the song recognizable and immortal . They are a beginning, an idea to what can be a great, killer song!

Deconstructing Sequence released their debut Ep "Year One" last year with their second Ep " Access Code" to hit on August 14th.

For our debut installment of In the riff we trust we sit down and talk to Cody Daniels from Giant of the Mountain for a chat about the almighty riff.

THE RIFF WHICH MADE YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GUITAR IS?

I think it was my 12th birthday or something and on our way back home from Pizza Hut my mom put on some ZZ Top and I couldn’t help but listen to the guitar solo and think that I really wanted to be able to do that.

WHAT IS THE FIRST RIFF YOU LEARNED TO PLAY?

My first riff was AC/DC’s back in black.  I was into a lot of classic rock before I discovered metal.

YOUR TOP THREE METAL RIFFERS ARE?

I’d have to say my top 3 riffers are Mikael from Opeth, Ihsahn from Emperor, and Chuck from Death.  All three have a progressive style, and each represent a different aspect of metal.

WHO IS THE MASTER OF THE RIFF?

Tony Iommi hands down.  Everything from the Ozzy years like, War Pigs, Into the Void, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath to the Dio days with Children of the Sea, and Over and Over shows why he’s a legend.

THE RIFF WHICH IS THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE IS?

The riff before the solo in Ozzy’s Diary of a Madman right after it comes out of that clean interlude.  That riff could inspire the dead to rise from their coffins and rule the earth.  It really hits the spot for me.

THE RIFF YOU WISH YOU WROTE IS?

The grooving riff in the middle of Emperor’s The Loss and Curse of Reverence.  I will admit that I have written a knock off version of that riff before.  It’s just so good!

THE WORST METAL RIFF EVER IS?

I would say Metallica’s Enter Sandman, because (in my opinion) it marked the beginning of the greatest crapfest this side of Hellyeah.

RIFF FOR RIFF YOUR FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS ARE?

Death – Symbolic
Opeth – My Arms, Your Hearse
Hour of Penance – Paradogma
Emperor – IX Equilibrium
Watain – Sworn to the Dark

A NON METALHEAD ASKS YOU WHAT DOES METAL SOUND LIKE, THE RIFF YOU PLAY THEM IS?

Giant of the Mountain – Moon Worship.  If I can get someone to think Giant of the Mountain when they think of metal, I’ve done my job.  You gots to be promotin’!

THE RIFF YOU WANT PLAYED AT YOUR FUNERAL IS?

Opeth – A Fair Judgement.  It’s got a vibe similar to what I imagine would be at a funeral.  The riff at the end is super huge, but it would lose its power without the context of the whole song.

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT RIFFS ANYWAY?

The power and energy.  A good riff can make you bang your head until your neck hurts.  The feeling that makes you want to put your fist through the wall without even being mad.  It’s a pretty magical thing.

GIANT OF THE MOUNTAIN'S LATEST ALBUM "MOON WORSHIP'' IS OUT NOW AND AVAILABLE DIRECTLY FROM THE BAND THROUGH THEIR BANDCAMP PAGE.

Fenriz of Darkthrone needs no introduction to the seasoned metalhead and has long become a seal of quality when it comes to underground metal and among those with a taste for the obscure so it's not a real surprise that for a man who listens to a mind boggling amount of metal to share some of his discoveries with fellow metalheads and that's exactly what he does with band of the week so if you have never heard of band of the week then prepare delve into the depths of the underground and make some truly great discoveries and for the rest of you who choose to ignore those treasures never will befall you.

In the cold dark barren wasteland of the forsaken far beyond the hellish torment their desperate cries can be heard like a desolate whisper spewed forth with venomous bile. Cold dark razor sharp dissonant riffs of black might. The void is where we dwell the ritual our spell. An ep of ritualistic black metal which draws you in to it's hypnotic black heart and holds you mesmerised within it's compelling darkness.

Dismemberment are yet another fine example of the wealth of quality underground metal bands out there plowing away at their craft regardless of trends with relentless dedication. Embrace the dark is further proof that the metal underground is as strong now as it has ever been. An energetic riff ride which could be extreme metal's answer to a classic album packed full of potential hit singles. Not that the album is poppy or catchy by any stretch of the imagination but the album does deliver quality stand alone songs which will get any self respecting metal fan on his feet while headbanging to the glory of the riff fest which his ears behold. From breakneck thrash to brutal death and black overtones it runs the gauntlet of the extreme, think of the modern day Carcass and your close in sound to Dismemberment. They certainly don't reinvent the wheel but what they do is keep the momentum of the metal going at a megatonic rate.  It would be a shame to metal as a whole if this album passed unknown into the annals of metal obscurity but one things for sure it will no doubt gain a cult following of dedicated metalheads who will speak in tones and spread the word to the true of heart.

Filthy murky and heavy as heavy can be loosely played technical riffs which vibrate through skulls and puncture lungs. The guitar tone is killer with bottom end used to great affect reminding me of a modern day Scott Burns production if he produced Cannibals Corpse's the bleeding under the influence of some heavy duty mind altering space weed. The music feels as if the speakers will collapse under the strain at any moment but yet somehow everything holds together. The artwork adds a nice touch which sadly is sometimes lacking in metal albums these days with bands paying little or no attention to the overall package and ties in nice with the concept from what I can garner of an alien invasion silently taking over the earth and slowly creating a slave state or are the aliens really our own world leaders? either way conspiracy and paranoia reign supreme in this Orwellian nightmare . An album for those who love death metal for all the brutallity warts and all carnage that follows each classic death metal album in it's wake. I have no doubt that those with a passing interest in death metal will probably not think much of this album but for the seasoned connoisseur it will be a welcome album to add to your collection. An album of longevity sure to warrant spin after spin.
