When it comes to late 80's early 90's death metal we all know about the ground breaking and pioneering Florida and Swedish death metal scenes and rightly so but it's seems that the rest of the world sometimes gets overshadowed. Which brings me to Finland in my eternal search for that overlooked hidden underground gem which will give the metalhead in me that fix which never seems to quite satisfy my ferocious need for metal. When it comes to Finland the bands that usually get mentioned are Demigod, Convulse, Amorphis and Demilich but there is one other band whose legacy shouldn't be underestimated releasing two underground demos at the tail end of the 80's and turn of the 90's and equaling in my opinion the deathly rumblings of most of what was coming out of neighbors Sweden at the time. Children of the Scorn is a bonified underground death metal classic warts and all. A filthy and brutal album which is unforgiving in it's relentless drudgery sounding like a swampy beast crawling from the deepest pits of morbid insanity. The guitars have an even more distorted and grittier sound than their Swedish counterparts and incorporate a lot of doom elements, think autopsy and your close. The album has a lot of atmosphere which is unusual for death metal releases at the time and along with the doomy riffs, some sporadic and background keyboard effects help to create this eerie feeling of unease. An album for death metal fans who are still in search of a classic death metal album of the 90's.
